Chlorine Free Summer

Pool weather is here. Taking a dip in the pool is a summertime favorite. One thing we don’t like to talk about is all the chlorine that gets in your hair and skin. Have you ever  noticed that being in a chlorine pool can make your hair a little more dry and brittle than normal. Luckily,  we have some tips that will help save your hair this summer.

Here are some tips and tricks that help you stay cool in the pool!

NUMBER ONE

Using some oil or silicone based products before jumping into the pool which can help lock in the moisture and natural oils that your hair produces. Coconut oil is great for this.  Give your hair a nice little mask and then jump on in with confidence for less damaged hair.

NUMBER TWO

Your hair is like a sponge. Soaking up whatever moisture it comes in contact with. So it’s suggested that you get your hair wet using water that does not have chlorine in it, like rinsing in the shower beforehand. It’s easier for your hair to not soak up chlorine water when it is already wet itself. I know! This sounds backwards from everything we already know about summertime swimming but if it promises less damage, we are all for trying it out.

NUMBER THREE

This tip is that you can actually use a swim cap to protect your hair. It won’t fully protect you from the effects of chlorine but it is probably the best that you can do if you are going to be having fun in the pool this summer.

Flag Cake Recipe

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

It’s America’s birthday and it’s only right that we celebrate with cake. Light, fluffy, sweet, and perfect for summer, flag cake!

This is the easiest cake that you will ever make and it is also the most delicious, simple, looks like you spent all day on it kind! Did we mention that this recipe is also kid-friendly too? Have the whole family join you in some fun!

Ingredients:

1 box of white or yellow cake mix.
8 oz. whipped cream
fresh strawberries
fresh blueberries

Instructions:

  1. Follow direction on your favorite cake mix. (I like to use a rectangle shaped cake pan for further flag effect)
  2. Let cake completely cool when it comes out of the oven.
  3. Spread whipped cream across the top, frosting generously.
  4. Arrange your blueberries in rows in the top left corner of your cake in order to resemble the “stars”. Personally I made rows of 8 across and 4 down.
  5. Next slice your strawberries, Take your strawberries and line them up in rows across the cake to resemble the “stripes”. I made 5 rows of strawberries going across the cake.

TAH-DAH, you are finished. The most simple cake you’ll ever taste, it’s light, fluffy delicious and perfect for the occasion. On top of that, this cake is a crowd pleaser, it didn’t last more than 10 minutes at my house.

Summer 2017 is in full effect and if you’re like me, living in Southern California, then you know summer has already started peeking through. To get that Snapchat worthy look while staying cool, toss your hair up into a messy braided crown. Simply braid your hair around your head in a crown plait style. For even more fun, add medium sized flowers to your crown. To keep it messy pull out a couple strands here and there for that perfect “I woke up like this” look.

The signature topknot is perfect for any occasion. Yoga, beach day, lunch with the girls, casual Fridays and if you sleek it back you can even make it a night look. I can’t think of anywhere I wouldn’t rock a topknot. This is a 2 minute hairstyle that can be complemented with a headband or gold hoop earrings, the possibilities are endless!

We are channeling beach vibes all summer long with this hair style. Since we want to combat frizz, this messy look is right up our alley. It’s ideal for those cool summer nights at the bonfire. How To Properly Wash Your Hair

Remember growing up when you thought if you didn’t wash your hair every single day it would fall out? Well, welcome to the new age, where we now know going a couple of days in-between every wash is actually ideal.  Now that we have the frequency down, we really need to focus on making those 2-3 times a week you scrub your locks count.

Step one:
Before stepping into the shower make sure you are brushing your hair out starting from the ends and working your way up. Doing this before the shower is ideal because it allows you to detangle. You never want to use a brush to detangle when your hair is wet because it is just too harsh.

Step Two:
Always rinse your hair with warm water first. Before applying any products to your hair, make sure you give it a thorough rinse with just warm water. This will help open up cuticles which will get any trapped dirt out.

Step Three:
A little bit of product actually goes a long way. Using just about a quarter sized squeeze of PON (Pure Organic Natural) shampoo is enough to get the results we’re looking for. Shampoo is supposed to cleanse your hair and rid it of dirt and toxins, using too much can actually work against you by stripping your hair of its natural vitamins and oils. Focus on the roots when shampooing and help lather it up with your fingertips and avoid shampooing the ends of your hair.

Step Four:
Once your PON (Pure Organic Natural) shampoo is thoroughly rinsed out take your conditioner and work that from mid-length all the way down to the tips of your hair. You don’t need to put conditioner on the roots of your hair because your scalp already produces enough natural oils. Take your hair and clip it up while you finish the rest of your shower routine. This will ensure you get a good 5-15 minutes soaking that moisture into your hair before we wash it out.

Tip: You don’t need to use conditioner every time, especially when you’re going to style your hair for a night out.

Step Five:
Take a dip in cold water. When getting ready to rinse out your conditioner, switch your faucet from hot to cold. Since we started with opening up your hair cuticles we want to finish by sealing your cuticles. This will help lock in the moisture and shine and create beautiful smooth and healthy hair. Did we mention this will also help your hair become shiny too?

Extras:
Once every week or so we like to take our routine to the next level by deep conditioning my hair with a natural DIY hair mask. Don’t Forget About You: Self Love, Love Yourself

With all the love in the air, don’t forget to share a little bit of that love with yourself.

However, self love or loving yourself is sometimes the hardest things to do because on some days it is just really hard to find a kind word for yourself or to turn off that little voice in your head. To help you find your own love you or happiness ritual, here are a few of our favorite to do.

Love Your Mind

Loving yourself is sometimes the hardest things to do because on some days it is just really hard to find a kind word for yourself. Keep your pep talk positive like you would for your best friend. Staying positive is key to loving yourself.

Love Your Body
Your body is a strong, healthy, and beautiful. Your body allows you to walk and talk and jump and run, so make sure to treat your body with the respect it.

One way to show self-love is to nourishing your body with whole healthy foods and drinks is an everyday self love activity that can easy be included in your life because food is the energy that keeps us going. A great way to eat better is to start cooking.

Another great way to show your body self-love is to get moving and grooving. Move that gorgeous body every day and learn to love your skin. Try turning up the music and dancing in your room or simple just taking a walk around the block. Both are a great way to let loose and reboot.

The last way is to pamper yourself. This could mean taking a nice hot bath or and shower, getting your nails done, or going out for a nice jog. When you love your body that self-love is what can help bring a smile to your face. DIY Hair Spa Recipe

 

Renew and Refresh Hair

All our recipes use all natural ingredients you can easy find and are also easy to make!

One of my favorite and super easy home hair spa recipes is the Four-Oil Hair Recipe. With these blends of oils, I started seeing healthier hair by adding extra nourishment and conditioning your scalp and hair follicles. All I did was blend four oils together and massage it into my scalp. Pon’s Four Oil Hair Blend

Ingredients: 
Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
Sweet Almond Oil
Sesame Oil
Coconut Oil

Directions:
Mix 1 teaspoon of each oil at room temperature (slightly warmed is OK)in a small bowl. Make sure all oils are blended thoroughly. Gently massage the oil into your scalp using your fingertips. Make sure to work your way from the root to end, so all the hair is covered evenly. Let it sit for about 15-30 minutes and rinse.  

Optional:Leave in overnight for a deep conditioning experience. Don’t forget to cover your hair with a shower cap or  a thick towel over your pillow to protect your linens. In the morning, gently shampoo out the oil with a natural or organic shampoo like PON’s.

You May or May Not Be Doing This To Your Hair Every Day!

Do you notice the bad hair habits you have? We have listed 3 bad hair habits women do almost every single day. It’s time to avoid this, ladies! Here are some of the most common practices that are actually damaging your hair.

Bad Habit #1: Manhandling your Wet Hair

Hair is at its weakest and most fragile when it is wet, so some of the worst things you can do right out of the shower is to roughly towel dry your hair, brush your wet hair, and wrap your wet hair up in a towel.

What to do instead. Try using a wide-tooth comb while conditioning your strands and gently pressing or blotting to remove the extra moisture. An extra plus to patting, opposed to rubbing with a towel, as it reduces frizz, knots and tangles.

Bad Habit #2: Not Cleaning your Hairbrush

You have a regular routine of washing your hair, but when was the last time you washed your hair brush?

Hair brushes are breeding grounds for bacteria. Yikes!

What to do instead. A good practice is to use a toothbrush to scrub and deep clean your hairbrush with a mixture of baking soda and lukewarm water every single month to prevent a layer of hair, product buildup, and bacteria and all that other gunk.

Using heat-styling tools like a blow dryer or a flat iron on too high of a heat setting or for too long can really extend the damage to your hair.  Furthermore, if you have color or chemical-treated hair the damages are even worse.

A better practice to keep your hair healthy and beautiful is to make sure to replenish all that lost moisture with regular oil treatments, deep conditioning, and by finding a great moisturizing or hydrating shampoo.
